Review: Princess Cabaret

As a little girl, I grew up reading about Snow White, Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast. I would dream of the devilishly handsome man who would  sweep me off my feet, kiss me passionately on the lips and offer me my ‘happy ever after’. As a young girl I didn’t think I could be truly fulfilled unless I reached these impossible ideals! Those Disney Princesses have a lot to answer for…

Seven extremely talented women challenge this perception by taking those meek and male-dependant icons and proving that happy endings don’t always require a prince. Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Jasmine, Ariel, Beauty and Tinkerbell (who, being a fairy, is outed because she’s not a princess) make an appearance in Princess Cabaret. Through satirical, fast-paced sketches and polished song-and-dance routines (my goodness, these girls have some voices) they explode the stereotype that women need to play it meek and mild and subdue their personalities to get and keep a man. In fact, as their final song and dance piece indicates – why not give the fairer sex a go?

Princess Cabaret is tongue-in-cheek, tightly structured, intelligently written and very, very naughty. I left the show humming the tune of Sexy Back/Sexist Back and smiling from ear-t0-ear.

Door Rating: Sorry, I am not on the door, I am watching the show.
